The absent Rumpole stories
In the Rumpole stories the text refers to several early courtroom triumphs of Rumpole such as The Penge Bungalow Murders, and The Great Brighton Benefit Club Forgery. The account of the first of these was published in the 2004 novel of the same name. Alas, the other stories of past cases were mentioned in passing only. They are not missing stories as such. It's more correct to call them absent stories because they were never written either by John Mortimer as the author or Horace Rumpole as the memoirist. Most of the cases in the following list are past glories, but a few of them are cases mentioned by Rumpole in transit from a named completed trial to his new case about which he is writing. The earlier trials are dropped into Rumpole's memoirs to illustrate his legal history and career. Research is continuing to locate these unwritten early tales in the books. Those that have been identified are:
The Streatham Co-Op Robbery
Mentioned in Rumpole and the Younger Generation
The Great Brighton Benefit Club Forgery
Mentioned in Rumpole and the Younger Generation and Rumpole and the Married Lady
The Euston Bank Robbery, 1938

THE MISSING AND UNCOLLECTED STORIES
Eleven stories printed in newspapers and magazines remain unpublished by Penguin in any Rumpole of the Bailey book. Arguably this is nine stories because two of them as noted below were merged into one short story included in Rumpole Rests His Case.
