Saint Louis by Jacques Legoff is the definitive study of Louis IX and running to nearly one thousand pages never likely to be surpassed in its depth - or weight. This book has had praise from all who have reviewed it but is now out of print and very expensive to obtain.
A cheaper alternative, although now quite old, is Saint Louis by Margaret Wade Labarge. It has never been reprinted but is not hard to obtain on the internet from used book vendors. Labarge specialised in thoroughly well researched history for a popular audience.
Louis IX and the Challenge of the Crusade is a revision of the author's thesis, Princeton, 1973, entitled: Saint Louis' influence on French Society and life in the thirteenth century.
