Henri IV
Henri IV
Reign: 1589 - 1610
French appellation: Good King Henry, the Green Gallant
Concurrent English Monarchs:
Elizabeth I (1558 - 1603)
James IV and I (1603 - 1625)
Three titles were found in English for this French king.
The earliest and therefore most out of date was by Desmond Seward, a British author of popular history. Seward also wrote ‘The Bourbon Kings of France, a general introduction to that house of kings.
David Buisseret, the author of ‘Henry IV King of France’ completed his Ph.D. degree at Cambridge University, and later was Professor in Southwestern Studies and the History of Cartography at the University of Texas at Arlington. His biography of Henry IV is a chronological account of Henry’s twenty-one year reign and leans towards popular history rather than an academic account looking at the structure of government and society.
The third and most recent title is the more academic title of the three. Vincent J. Pitts holds a European History Doctorate from Harvard University and has written extensively on France and Europe in the period in with Henri V was King of France. The recommendations on the publisher’s page for this book describe it as and engaging read suitable for students and scholars.
A biography of this king was promised in the ‘French Monarchs’ series but this line of books was discontinued. Use the link above for further information
